Generosity varies by time of day – When do your donors give?

Donor behavior research

When you’re appealing to the generosity of your donors, every second counts… and when that second happens matters, too. Your donors are busy, and their time is just as valuable as their money. So what’s a nonprofit to do? Make it easy for your donors to give when it’s most convenient for them by offering online giving!

GiveCentral’s recent survey of over 800 American donors told us that people are far more likely to donate in the evenings (36 percent) or on weekends (26 percent) than during the “normal” business nine-to-five. That’s a lot of generosity you might be missing if you’re not ready for off-hours giving.

When you offer online giving, your donors can make their gifts anytime, 24 hours a day, even from their phone. A quick minute or two is all it takes; when they check their email in between errands and see your giving request, they can take action right then and there.

They Gave More, More, More

Even better, our survey results show that donors particularly Millennials, are likely to give a bigger gift when they’re donating online. Averaged across all generations, 34 percent said they’d be likely to give more online than in person via cash or check. When looking at how much people gave both most recently and annually, online donors gave an average of $115 in their most recent gift, and a total of $781 over the past year. In comparison, cash and check donors only gave $82 most recently and $559 over the year. Those numbers are pretty convincing… the dollars speak for themselves. When you offer online giving, your donors can make their gifts anytime, 24 hours a day, from anywhere, from any device, on their own timeline. A quick minute or two is all it takes; when they check their email in between errands and see your giving request, they can take action right then and there. Are you ready to take their donation?
